About Omnia

Dr. Omnia Amin was a Senior Humanities Research Fellow in academic year 2017-18.

Prior to this, Omnia Amin had been a Professor in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at Zayed University (ZU) in Dubai, UAE from 2005 to 2017. She has taught courses including English and Comparative Literature and Culture and Heritage, in addition to interdisciplinary courses focusing on the Middle East region in general and on the Gulf region in particular. She coordinated and taught Senior Seminar courses and Capstone projects in which students undertake research on modern and contemporary global issues including topics such as the Arab Spring, Feminism in the Middle East and Honor Crimes in Arabic Literature. She served on a number of committees including the Curriculum Review and Faculty Promotion Committees, in addition to serving as a peer reviewer for the journal Learning and Teaching in Higher Education: Gulf Perspectives, published by Zayed University Press.

In Spring 2015 she was Visiting Lecturer at the University of Vilnius, Lithuania. She has presented at conferences in the US, Europe and the Middle East where she was a keynote speaker in some of them.

Before joining ZU, Omnia Amin was Head of the Department of English for four years at Philadelphia University in Jordan, as well as Head of the Language Centre for the Arabic and English Programs. During her seven years’ service there, she revised courses and updated the major programs, thus bringing the English department to the level of accreditation by ISO. In addition, she introduced two MA programs and expanded the department to include a major in Education.

Omnia Amin served as academic consultant for the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature and was appointed as cultural and academic advisor for the Fujairah Media and Culture Authority to promote their Monodrama Festival; She is a member of the judging committee for the monodrama competition and has been the official translator of the winning monodrama texts from Arabic into English since 2010.

In addition, Omnia Amin is a creative writer and the literary translator of leading authors including the late Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish, renowned Egyptian activist and writer Dr. Nawal El Saadawi and Jordanian writer Ibrahim Nassrallah. She had her own literary page in The Jordan Times Weekender for five years, as well as a weekly column called Cross Talk dedicated to contemporary cultural and social issues in the Arab World.

She was selected as editor in chief of a book series for Palgrave Macmillan entitled Contemporary Arab Literature.
