The modern history of political relations between Iraq and the Gulf countries had its challenges. Yet there were always cultural and social connections that remain intrinsic to their respective identities. Iraqi artists were employed as art teachers during the second half of the 20th century and through the early decade of the 21st in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, and Kuwait. Several contemporary artists continue to exhibit or keep studios in the UAE. This colloquim explores these relationships and investigates specific cases that have been vital in the development of modern and contemporary art in the Gulf and of the Arab world.
